John Starks Foundation and Tulsa 66ers Present Summer Leadership Sports Camp for Inner City Youth

TULSA, Okla., July 24, 2006 - The Tulsa 66ers have partnered with the John Starks Foundation to host the 12th Annual Summer Leadership Sports Camp for Inner City Youth. The camp will run July 25-28. Registered boys will attend the session at Booker T. Washington High School, located at 631 E. Woodrow Place. The girls' session will take place at Central High School, 3101 West Edison.


Keynote speakers for the Summer Leadership Sports Camp for Inner City Youth will include Roy Rogers, assistant coach for the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League, and John Starks, former NBA All-Star, former head coach for the Westchester Wildfire of the United States Basketball League (USBL), and currently Alumni Relations & Fan Development Advisor for the New York Knickerbockers.


"The biggest enlightenment that I have learned since the beginning of our youth sports program is that every child given a chance to succeed will make progress," said Starks. "All children need the opportunity to belong to a group that can give them positive life skills. We work hard to ensure that our youth are beginning to gain the skills necessary to be great member of the Tulsa community."


The camp is designed for boys and girls entering grades three through 12. The camp covers every facet of the game and emphasizes skill and technique development. The coaches take an active role in the teaching process and participate in stations, drills, and games. The camp is designed to provide children of all ages and skill level the opportunity to train and compete under the direction and guidance of a professional players and coaches.


The camp will focus on individual improvement in fundamentals: shooting, dribbling, passing, and defense. Daily scrimmages and other competitions will be a part of the daily schedule. In addition to basketball, the clinic will offer tips on scoring big in life by stressing the importance of education, and encouraging Tulsa youth to strive for excellence in all they do.


Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the respective high schools. Registration is free, but space is limited. Each youth participant will need to have parent or legal guardian fill out registration forms, emergency contact information and a liability waiver.Sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Campers are asked to wear appropriate clothing (athletic shorts, t-shirt, and athletic/gym shoes).
