Lynx Hire Jim Lewis as Assistant Coach

26 July 2006

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced that the team has hired coaching veteran Jim Lewis as an assistant coach for the remainder of the season. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"We are pleased to add someone with Jim's experience to assist Carolyn for the remainder of the season," said Lynx Chief Operating Officer Roger Griffith. "He has coached and scouted in the WNBA before and his extensive knowledge of women's basketball will be a big asset to the team."

In his 20 years as a head coach at the collegiate level, Lewis has amassed a 257-295 record, most recently as the head women's coach at Fordham University from 1999 to 2006. Prior to his six years with Fordham, Lewis served as the first head coach of the Washington Mystics in 1998. Lewis is also the winningest head coach in the history of George Mason University. In 14 seasons with the Patriots, he led the women's team to a 201-177 record and eight winning seasons.

Lewis began his 36-year coaching career as an assistant men's coach at Tennessee State University from 1969 to 1970. He also assisted with the men's programs at Gannon College (1970-71), Duke University (1971-76), and Tulane University (1976-81).

A graduate of West Virginia, Lewis holds a bachelor's degree in journalism as well as a master's in physical education from Tennessee State. Lewis was a four-year basketball letter winner for the Mountaineers. During West Virginia's 2004-2005 season, Lewis and his 1964-65 freshman class were honored for breaking the color barrier at the university.
