Minnesota Lynx to Broadcast First-Ever Game in Spanish on La Mera Buena

18 July 2006

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced that the team will conduct its first-ever Spanish-language game broadcast on July 27 as the Lynx host the Charlotte Sting at Target Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on La Mera Buena 107.5 FM (KBGY-FM), which also serves as the Spanish-language radio broadcast home of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Spanish radio broadcast on July 27 will be the first in the Lynx' eight-year history in the Twin Cities. The Lynx also become just the second team in WNBA history to broadcast a game in Spanish (Charlotte 2001, 2002).

"We're excited to be broadcasting our first Lynx game in Spanish, and are extremely pleased it is with La Mera Buena," said Timberwolves & Lynx President Chris Wright. "We are always looking for more ways to continually bring the excitement of professional basketball to the Twin Cities Latino community. La Mera Buena is the home for all Spanish-language broadcasts of professional basketball in the Twin Cities."

Along with the broadcast, the game is being tabbed "Verano Caliente" ("Hot Summer") with the Lynx and La Mera Buena. There will be Latino-themed entertainment pregame as well as at halftime, and a special family ticket offer has been introduced for the game. For $40, fans can receive 4 lower-level tickets and 4 Lynx t-shirts. There are additional ticket specials for groups and businesses. For more information about any of these offers, contact the Lynx at 612-673-1693.

Minnesota has one of the fastest-growing Hispanic populations in the nation with over one quarter of a million residents. Hispanics in the Twin Cities, Southern Minnesota and parts of Iowa and Wisconsin are tuning in to "La Mera Buena" 107.5 FM, Minnesota's first 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year Spanish-language FM radio station.

The play-by-play announcer for the game will be Alfonso Fernandez, who served in the same capacity this past season with the Timberwolves and NFL's Minnesota Vikings. Additionally, Fernandez has called games in Spanish for the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers and Rams.

The Lynx & Timberwolves have made Latino outreach one of the team's major initiatives. The organizations have participated in Latino celebrations such as Family Fiesta, Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day and La Familia. In addition, the Timberwolves have hosted Latino-themed games with entertainment including Spanish announcers, mariachi bands, special halftimes by Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc and Hermanos Escamilla and postgame talks in Spanish by Wolves forward Mark Madsen. This past season the Wolves participated in community basketball clinics and in supplying tickets for Latino non-profit organizations.
