Sky end road trip in Detroit Saturday24 July 2006
The Chicago Sky continues their weeklong road trip to take on the Detroit Shock Saturday.The Shock defeated the Sky (81-66) last month in their only meeting of the year. KatieSmith and Ruth Riley led the Shock in that meeting when Riley recorded a double-doublescoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds and Smith scored a game high 21 points.Heading into the game, Detroit is trying to position themselves into making a run at firstplace Connecticut Sun. The Chicago Sky is back home on Tuesday with hopes for another victory against theNew York Liberty. The Sky defeated the Liberty on July 7 (78-73) at home. RookieCandice Dupree led the team in points with 20 on the night. The Liberty is led by guardBecky Hammon, who has started in every game she has appeared in this season,averaging a career best 15.4 points per game. Another player to watch is ShamekaChriston, who is averaging 13 points in her third season in the WNBA. New York iscurrently one game up in the standings over Chicago. Wyckoff in Voting for One of the WNBA's Greatest Moments Brooke Wyckoff comes off the bench for the Connecticut Sun and nails a three-pointerfrom the corner to send Game 2 of the 2005 WNBA Finals into overtime. (Not open to public, requires pre-registration) Minnesota Lynx Game Notes The Sky traveled to Minneapolis on July 19 to take on the Minnesota Lynx for the firsttime in team history and were defeated 90-82. The game featured two of the toprookies in the WNBA, Candice Dupree of the Sky, and Minnesota's Simone Augustus,both of who participated in last weeks All-Star Game. The Sky jumped out to an early 5-point lead in the first quarter when Dupreedrove the lane for a lay-up. Dupree came into the game ranked 3rd among rookies inpoints per game with an average of 12.8. She scored 14 in the game. Augustus, cameinto the game leading the WNBA in scoring with an average of 23.3 points per game.Augustus had 18 on the day. The Lynx took a 5-point lead into half-time behind 7 pointsfrom Augustus in the second quarter and never trailed again. The game got away fromthe Sky in the 3rd quarter when the Lynx went on 17-3 run to extend their lead to 15points.Despite the loss, there were a few bright spots for the Sky. Bernadette Ngoyisahad her second double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11rebounds. Stacey Dales added 13 points off the bench, in her second game back frominjury. As a team, the Sky managed to steal the ball from the Lynx 16 times. The teamrecord for steals in a game came against the Charlotte Sting on May 20th, when the Skycollected 17 steals. Connecticut Sun Game Notes The Connecticut Sun handed the Sky their 5th consecutive loss on July 20th by ascore of 86-72. The Sun never trailed in the game, and shot 52% from the field on thenight. The Sky continued to struggle from the field shooting 39.7%.Jia Perkins was a bright spot for Chicago, tying a franchise record with 21 pointsin the game. Perkins also set a career record on the night, hitting 5 three pointers. Skyforward Liz Shimek continues to improve for the team coming off the bench. Shescored a team bench high 7 points on 3-6 shooting form the field. Bernadette Ngoyisahad 14 points and 6 rebounds coming of off her 2nd double-double performance of theyear at Minnesota. Connecticut had 4 players score in double-figures, led by KatieDouglas who scored a team high 19 points. The win gave the Sun their 5th win in 6games to improve their Eastern Conference 1st place record to 16-6. With the loss, theSky fell to 3-19 on the season.
