Van Chancellor named WNBA's coach of the decade13 July 2006
NEW YORK (JULY 12, 2006), - Houston Comets head coach Van Chancellor was named the WNBA's Coach of the Decade, it was announced today by League President Donna Orender. The WNBA's All-Decade Team was announced June 13, 2006. "Four championships, three coach of the year awards, a dynasty and four players on the All-Decade team in ten seasons at the helm of the Comets," said Orender. "Van has made an undeniable mark on women's basketball and on the WNBA. His legacy is assured as winner and champion with more chapters still to write." As the Comets only head coach, Chancellor led Houston to four consecutive titles from 1997-2000. During the 2000 season, Chancellor led the Comets to their fourth consecutive WNBA Championship and became the only professional sports franchise in the United States in the past decade to win four straight titles. The WNBA's Coach of the Year in 1997, 1998 and 1999, Chancellor has compiled a 205-104 overall record. He ranks as the all time winningest coach in League history. "I'm really, really, really honored," said Chancellor. "It truly is a special day for me, and I really appreciate being named Coach of the Decade." With voting conducted by a blue-ribbon panel of national media earlier this week, Chancellor was a unanimous pick. He joins Comets players Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompson and Dawn Staley on the All-Decade Team. Following is a complete list of the WNBA's All-Decade Team.
